Eve of Graduation

Description

"It's that time again, isn't it?" Liam thought to himself as he curled his long limbs into himself between the book stacks in the school's library. This was his sanctuary over the last few months where he was enrolled in the Mirai Academy. But that time had come to a close. June had rolled around again and it was that time of the year, again. Liam couldn't quite remember how many schools and academies he had been through since he was sent away from home 7 years ago. And today, on the eve of his graduation, he came to the realisation that he was about to leave this place as well.

Crouched in the darkness surrounded by books, he thought back to the months that he had spent in the school and its grounds. He thought back to the people he had met and the acquaintances he had made. Faces of people he saw in the halls danced in his head as his impeccable memory brought every conversation back to life. Like a broken movie projector, the scenes sped up and wound down, sometimes overlapping each other as they played. The good times and the bad times rolled through like a steamroller careening down a narrow memory lane. Just as the movie in his mind started to reach a fevered pitch, an intrusive idea entered Liam's head. It was a voice of sanity of the kind that sustained him through all the years of isolation and constant migration. "It will all come to pass," it said with an unwavering, even tone. "And soon these people won't remember you anymore. And it would be time to move on."

The differences between honeyed lies and truth were too infinitesimal. "No one will remember you the way you remember them. They can't," the voice of sanity rang through Liam's ears as he wrapped himself tighter in the darkness. "So it's time to move on. You were never one of them anyway."

Liam dropped his head into his folded arms. He wasn't sure where his next stop would be, but it was clear it was time to move on.

We all go through graduations. And for many of us this is an uncertain time when we think back to the people we've met and places we've been. It's a bittersweet occasion to say the very least. More bitter than sweet for someone like Liam, perhaps.

This is an open RP-stem. Please feel free to walk in and start talking. I'd be interested to see what you have to say.

I wish I can compose words like you do...I am really pleased a lot to read the note. I raised my head and looked up to the image of Liam again anasd again while I am reading it.
Thanks for sharing those kind of things with us :D
