Description

「二三枚取て重ねる紅葉哉」-正岡子規
"Picking up two or three of the overlapping red leaves" - Shiki Masaoka

As promised earlier, I planned to turn my recent interest in spot-colour into a series. And as promised earlier, it was going to be named Kureha (Red Leaves). And now... after 6 month's worth of on and off work, I present to you the whole Kureha series.

Top row: #1: "Hitoshi" (一志, "one will"), #7: "Kaze" (風, "wind"), #3: "Marebito" (稀人, "rare visitor"), #8: "Haruka" (春華, "spring flower"), #10: "Irezumi" (入墨, "tattoo")
Second row: #4: "Hozuki" (鬼灯, "Chinese lantern plant", or Physalis alkekengi
), #2: "Kouchou no Yume" (蝴蝶の夢, "butterfly's dream"), #5: "Banashi"  (囃子, "folk songs"), #9: "Hitori" (一人, "one person"), #12: "Matsuri"  (祭, "festival")
Last row: "#6: "Hanami" (花見, "flower-viewing"), #11: "Fu'un" (風雲, "storms", literally windy clouds)

This series, I think, will mark my farewell to this topic. The artist whose art form the main inspiration for this series, Fukaya Yuichiro, has been one of my long-time muses. But as all good things must end, I think this is the time to wave this chapter of my life good bye and bid it a fond farewell. It's been grand for the last 7 years. And we've been through a whole lot during this considerable time. So please join me in this bitter-sweet occasion.

Of course, it doesn't mean this is the end of my paper-cutting career. It just means it's time to go out, explore, and find more muses and inspiration. And if you have anyone that you think I should check out, definitely let me know!

Artist's Note
1. Pattern credit: The incomparable Fukaya Yuichiro. More information here: www.ne.jp/asahi/hard/pain/ (His signature seal is also shown in this piece.)
2. Equipment: Cutting board, artisan cutting blade (#11)
3. Paper: Main body: 80lb (215gsm) cardstock and Recollections Card Stock by Michael's Inc. (65lbs/176gsm). Colour inset: Chiyogami origami paper, approx 32lbs (120gsm).
4. Size:  4.5"x 6.5"(11.43 cm x 16.51 cm) x 12
5. Time: From March 2016 to September 2016
6. It's hard to explain what a "Marebito" is. But this is where Wikipedia comes in: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marebito
7. The opening quote came from the late 19th Century Haiku poet, Shiki Masaoka. The awful translation is mine. If you have a better one, definitely let me know!
